Responding to the announcement by School Standards Minister Nick Gibb today that the Government will develop a new model music curriculum to be published by the summer.

Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI & BRIT Awards, said:

“Britain is a global leader in music from classical to pop and from grime to rock, but every great artist starts with the inspiration to play, and great teachers and vibrant, engaging music lessons in all schools can give that inspiration. This is a positive step in that Government is recognising that structured music lessons are a critical part of the curriculum and part of the wider experience children should benefit from in their education. Funding and promoting much stronger music education in all schools won’t just benefit music. Music teaches confidence, collaboration and creative thinking, which are vital life skills that help in any career.”

The Department for Education has announced:

  • £1.33 million extra funding to music education hubs
  • A new model music curriculum to be published by the summer 2019
  • An independent panel of experts to create new curriculum
  • A commitment to refresh the National Plan for Music Education by 2020.
