Episode 4: A Classical Label and an AR Start-Up Walk Into A Studio…
Building on its various innovation-led initiatives of the past 12 months, including its groundbreaking Grow Music partnership with London & Partners announced in July, the BPI today airs Episode 4 of its new BPI Innovation Podcasts.
In this fourth episode, host and BPI Innovation Manager, Amalie Briden, is found in conversation with Becky Lees, Head of LSO Live, and Christina Calio, Co-Founder of Popins.
What happens when a classical label partners up with a volumetric video start-up to create collectible holograms of their players? What playful, risk-taking experiments emerge, that could shape the future of artist/ fan relationships, bring new revenue models and begin scaling new technologies?
In this special edition, bite-size episode, the BPI Innovation Podcast focuses on the story of LSO Live and US start-up Popins. As part of the BPI Match Maker Programme, which brings together start-ups and UK indie labels, Popins came to London to create collectible holograms for over 100 indie artists. One of their partners - LSO Live - is a classical label keen to lean in to emerging technologies; to explore AR as a pathway to enhancing the live concert experience; and using immersive storytelling techniques to introduce more people to the joys of classical music.
This fourth episode discusses their collaboration, their interest in using emerging technologies to enhance the audience and fan relationship, and just how long they think it’ll be before AR is adopted as part of the mainstream music industry.
Airing fortnightly on alternate Thursdays, the BPI Innovation Podcast aims to spotlight the most interesting, innovative ideas that are taking shape across the music industry today. They will look to highlight exciting new technologies that are powering or are being powered by music and by the innovative record labels and start-ups collaborating successfully to shape the future of our industry.
Hosted by BPI’s Innovation Manager, Amalie Briden, and produced by the BPI’s Laura Bower, each episode will explore a key issue – and the opportunities or challenges that come with this. It will bring together record label executives, start-up founders, and other voices drawn from across the BPI’s community of members and partners, to explore their unique perspectives.
The BPI Innovation Podcast series is designed for anyone working in, or interested in the recorded music industry and the tech start-ups and scale-ups that are shaping meaningful change in how we discover, consume and engage with music. Listeners can tune in to hear case-studies and real-world examples of how innovation is blossoming in the music industry, and so better understand the types of partnerships that are flourishing between labels and start-ups.
