Welcome to the first edition of 'Department Focus' - part of the brand new monthly BPI Independent Members Newsletter.

For January's edition, we hear from our Director of Insight, Leon Neville on the Insight team's brilliant schedule of 2022 events and plans for the year ahead.

The BPI Insight Department is made-up of a small but perfectly formed team of three, comprising of Rob Crutchley, our research and data oracle; our most recent recruit, Amalie Briden, who joined as Innovation Manager last summer; and myself Leon Neville - I joined BPI just over a year ago taking over from our outgoing long-serving Research Director, Chris Green, who retired in December 2021.

Our team’s output is a mixture of reports and online and in-person events that update, inform, and hopefully inspire BPI members, on the latest trends and news impacting the recording music industry.

Last year, our team ran three Insight Sessions in association with our sponsors Bowers & Wilkins. Our most recent session on Immersive Audio explored mixing and mastering tools and what they mean for the market,  and before that in the early autumn, The House That Rap Built, was a series of panel discussions on the successes and opportunities that UK Rap music now offers the industry. These were our first ‘post-lockdown’ Insight events and were hosted at the iconic Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. In the summer, we also ran an online Insight Session on Shortform Video, exploring its opportunities and watchouts for reaching audiences with your repertoire’s content.

If you missed these events the first time around, they are available to all BPI Members via our Insights On Demand webpage. In the future, we will always feature a live stream option for our in-person events, so please do sign up for these so you can stay in the loop from wherever you are. We will also continue to add edits of all our future Insight Session events onto our On Demand page.

In 2022, we also grew the number of innovation companies taking part in BPI’s Music & Tech Springboard Programme. For those who don’t know, this is a growing, global community of start-ups, looking to work with the UK record industry. We’ll share more in the coming weeks about opportunities to get involved in 2023.

Looking ahead, our team will be contributing to the 2023 programme of events which will be supporting the BPI in its special 50th anniversary year – stay tuned for announcements to come! We are also currently working behind the scenes on the next edition of our All About the Music 2023 annual stats book which is in its 44th year of production and will be released in the Spring.

This is just the first newsletter update and we look forward sharing more news across the year. Please do reach out if you are interested in discussing any of our work further – see my contact details below - and if aren’t already doing so, please share our work with your colleagues - whether that is our Insight Sessions, member networking or the fantastic programme of training that the BPI offers!

Thanks and wishing you all a great 2023!

Leon Neville - Director of Insight
