Ian Moss Appointed as BPI Director of Public Affairs, 3 June 2011

The BPI has appointed Ian Moss to the role of Director of Public Affairs with effect from 6 June 2011.

Geoff Taylor, BPI Chief Executive, said:  “We are delighted that Ian is joining the BPI as Director of Public Affairs.  Ian is a thoroughly accomplished Whitehall operator with a strong background in developing and delivering policy at a senior level in Government.  His strategic experience and passion for music will help us ensure that music companies maintain a persuasive voice in the ongoing debate about the role of creative industries in the digital age.”

Ian Moss joins the BPI from his role as a Director at the Ministry of Justice, where he also undertook a secondment to the Institute for Government as one of two annual Whitehall fellows looking at improving the structures, policy making and delivery capacity of the UK Government.  Prior to this, Ian headed up the Strategy Unit at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Ian spent time as a Senior Policy Advisor in HM Treasury looking at growth and regulation in the creative industries and at the Office of Telecommunications, advising on broadcasting and convergence. Before becoming a civil servant he worked in Parliament and in Public Affairs.

Commenting on his appointment, Ian Moss added, “I started out from University as a failed rock star and ended up in politics and policy. Hopefully I can use what I have learnt in that time to help some successful ones. It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to working to support one of Britain’s great global industries.”

Ian replaces Theo Blackwell, who is leaving BPI to pursue political activity in local government as the newly elected Cabinet Member for Finance at London Borough of Camden.

About BPI

The BPI is the representative voice of the UK recorded music business. The BPI is a trade organisation funded by its members - which include hundreds of independent music companies and the UK’s four major record labels. The BPI’s members account for approximately 90% of all recorded music sold in the UK, and globally the UK's recorded music market is the third biggest.

The BPI also organises the annual BRIT Awards show as well as the Classic BRIT Awards show. The organising company, BRIT Awards Limited, is a fully owned subsidiary of the BPI. Substantial proceeds from both shows go to the BRIT Trust, the charitable arm of the BPI that has donated almost £15m to charitable causes nationwide since its foundation in 1989.
