This section looks at retail sales in the albums and singles markets and the relative shares accounted for by each format across the period 2004 to 2010. The Top 20 best selling albums and singles of 2010 are also listed out.

SALES BY TYPE OF MUSIC
This new expanded section looks at the share of sales accounted for by each major genre in the albums and singles markets between 2001 and 2010. It also features special genre focus pages on the Rock, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Dance and MOR/Easy markets with case studies on some of the best sellers of the year in each.

MUSIC AND GAMES
Music continues to be a key component of some of the best selling console games and this chapter looks at this sector of the market, worth around £95m in 2009. There were plenty of developments of note throughout the year, with the release of the first Beatles-themed game and the runaway success of Just Dance. The consumer data chapter demonstrates the changing demographic profile of today’s music buyers, from indices such as penetration and average spend per buyer to the most up-to-date age, gender and class profiles. It also looks at expenditure by genre and buyer information on those who only purchase physical or digital music, as well as those who buy both.

PIRACY
This chapter features new research on the extent of illegal downloading in the UK and the patterns of behaviour exhibited by those using such sites and networks. There is also an update on the work undertaken by the BPI Anti-Piracy Unit (APU) in combating the various threats on both physical and file sharing. WORLD MARKET
The success of UK music overseas is explored in the world market section of the book, which charts the top UK artist albums by worldwide sales in 2010 and also looks at global market data from IFPI.
