The BPI Sync Licensing mission is now just about a week away, although it probably seems like those concerned have been working on nothing else for months now………
The programme is obviously at this late stage more or less finalised, although there are still a few niggling loose ends which will all come together at the last minute. The event kicks off on Monday night (19th) at the aptly named Libertine nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood (8210 W. Sunset Boulevard to be precise)... the club advertises itself as ‘a guaranteed hangover’ and is open all night, which sounds like the perfect storm for a bunch of UK music business people. The infamous
Hunnypot radio show is hosted by Hunnypot CEO John Anderson and will be aired live from the club. They are devoting the entire broadcast to welcoming delegates from the UK and featuring music and performances from some of our delegate companies. This is the first time that we have done this, so my fingers are tightly crossed that everything goes well. The show itself runs from 7.30/10.00 local time (London +8 hours) and can be heard on the internet through the above Hunnypot website. I strongly recommend that you give it a listen if you can’t come along yourself. Notwithstanding the near certainty of a late night, we start early 9.00 AM sharp the next morning… and an attendance register will be taken!

Another new innovation this year is working with UK trade paper Music Week to produce a cover mount CD featuring music from UK companies coming on the mission. With 40+ companies registered on the mission, not everyone is included, but we’ve managed to get 22 tracks on to the 70 minute CD… look out for it in this week’s (Monday 12th) Music Week. As a bonus we’ve managed to get a copy of this edition of Music Week with the CD into the ‘Welcome’ package that will be given out at the prestigious MUSEXPO event which takes place in Los Angeles the week after our event and attracts many hundreds of delegates from around the world. I’m pleased to say that both of these innovations have been very positively received by all our delegates and we hope to build on them in future events.

Our mission programme includes many of the most highly regarded people involved in the sync licensing industry in Los Angeles. Although this is the third one that I have been involved with, I’m constantly amazed at the quality of people that are prepared to participate in our event. If you watch Heroes, Lost, CSI, FlashForward, Glee and a host of other TV programmes, then if you’re on the mission you’ll be meeting the people who are involved in the music selection for these shows. In addition, there are seminars featuring legal practitioners (I dread to think what the cost would be if they were charging us their normal hourly rates!); computer games creators; film makers and many, many more. The full and final confirmed programme will be lodged in due course on the web-site.
Following a packed 3 three days (Tuesday through to Thursday), delegates have a chance to relax and/or schedule their own meetings on the Friday, before the closing event on the afternoon of Saturday 24th, a reception for delegates at the private residence of the British Consul-General in Los Angeles, Dame Barbara Hay. Although this last item in the schedule is a great way to round off the mission, it is also a very important part of the programme giving delegates a chance to network and socialise with many of the presenters that they may have met for the first time that week that also come to the party.
It is hoped that Music Week will be reporting back throughout the event on its news website and I will certainly be writing more on this topic throughout. Stay tuned……….
